Roagathus – Where old rural culture and modern ambience go hand in hand

Roagat Hus – Tradition meets way of life

At the foot of mountain Mittagsspitze: an ancient farm. From Sleeping Beauty to new life. In the middle of an ancient rural cultural region.
Whether summer or winter: the most modern ambience combines with chic & charm. Three dreamlike apartments are witnesses of old architecture and signposts to the future of modern living culture.
With the knowledge of the ancestors, caution in planning and the latest technology in execution. Here you can experience the Bregenzerwald from its finest side.

History

The settlement of the rear Bregenzerwald took place from the year 1000 and was completed around 1200. The first inhabitants of Mellau settled in Übermellen, the lowlands were only gradually reclaimed. Our house was built around 1460 above a vaulted cellar which was several years older, making it the oldest still existing house in the valley floor.

The Mellau area served the people of Schwarzenberg in this time as a presidency, from which an independent municipality developed only in the 16th century. Life was hard and the people were modest, still in the 20th century almost all lived from agriculture. Isolated legacies on the wooden walls of our house refer to this time. In the living room chickens were sometimes kept, the chamber next to it served as a sheep and goat stable, in the smokehouse pigs lived and in particularly cold winters the cow was taken into the house because it gave warmth. The so-called death door, through which the souls of the deceased were to escape from the house, and various carvings next to the windows and doors bear witness to the popular piety of the people of bygone times.

Reconstruction

The renovation and quasi “revival” of the old house had been in our heads for a long time, but the task seemed enormous. After many long and weighty considerations we took our hearts in 2014 and started work the following year.
It seems to us that the result of these efforts is something to be proud of.
